Historical Overview of Lithium Polymer Cells

Invention of Alessandro Volta, batteries served primary electrical needs until the late 19th century, preceding generator use. Each advancing year boosted battery technology, guaranteeing further innovation. Prominent scientists and engineers crafted innovative commercial batteries including wet cells employed extensively in telegraph and phone networks.

The practical application of battery technology initially emerged from Alessandro Volta, serving as the primary electricity source before generators appeared. Utilizing wet cell technology, early electric vehicles relied on these semi-sealed cells. This history laid the foundations for LiPo cell evolution. Lithium-ion and lithium-metal cells birthed LiPo polymer battery discovery in the 1980s. A demonstration of note was Sony’s introduction of the first commercial Li-ion cell in 1991. This ushered an evolution introducing a pouch format known as “LiPo”.
